New options for your XG Firewall – Sophos News

With XG Firewall v18, there are a variety of great upgrade options that you can take advantage of to significantly enhance your network protection, performance, and management capabilities.

Protection upgrades

Do you have Sophos Sandstorm Protection?  It’s a must-have.

Sandstorm Protection is available as an add-on subscription and is also part of our “Plus” bundles: EnterpriseGuard Plus and FullGuard Plus. If you don’t currently have Sandstorm as part of your license, reach out to your Sophos partner for a quote – it costs a lot less than you might think. In fact, we’ve made this ultra-important protection extremely affordable to ensure everyone can benefit from it.

You can quickly check if you already have the Sandstorm license for your XG Firewall: in the console, go to the Administration > Licensing tab to be sure. If you don’t have this protection, make sure you subscribe as soon as possible. It provides critically important threat protection against today’s ransomware and other advanced threats.

The Threat Meter provides at-a-glance threat analysis results.

If you already have Sophos Sandstorm Protection, you should upgrade to v18 as soon as possible to take advantage of the critical new protection technologies included in the enhanced Sandstorm subscription at no extra charge. The new AI-powered static threat intelligence analysis greatly expands on the zero-day threat protection that Sandstorm provides. It uses multiple machine-learning models to render a verdict in seconds and convict never-seen-before ransomware and other attacks BEFORE they get on the network. It also adds in-depth reporting on suspicious and malicious files entering the network that no one should be without.

For new customers purchasing and deploying an XG Firewall for the first time, ensure that you can take advantage of this great multi-layer protection from the start by purchasing one of the  Sophos Plus bundles (EnterpriseProtect Plus or TotalProtect Plus).

XG series upgrades and TLS inspection

Last year, we introduced the new XG 86(w) and 106(w) models with added RAM to the XG series lineup to be ready for XG Firewall v18 and all the new capabilities it provides. If you have any locations running older XG 85/105 models, now is the perfect time to refresh to a newer model and take advantage of all the great new capabilities in v18.

With the new streamlined encrypted traffic inspection with TLS 1.3 support in the new Xstream architecture, now may also be a great time to refresh aging hardware to take full advantage of the new visibility and protection you can get with XG Firewall v18 by enabling TLS inspection on important traffic flows. TLS inspection is critically important to take full advantage of the Sandstorm Threat Intelligence features mentioned above, since many files are now downloaded over encrypted connections.

SD-RED upgrades

In April, we announced the new SD-RED devices. If you’ve been using one of the RED 15 or 50 devices for a number of years or still rely upon the much older, end-of-life RED 10,  now may be the time to refresh your network infrastructure with one of the exciting new models that offer greater performance, flexible connectivity, and redundant power supply options.

Sophos Central

Sophos Central management and reporting for XG Firewall is free for all XG Firewall customers and partners. In addition to the free reporting capability, we recently announced the option for customers to extend their firewall reporting storage to dramatically increase their historical reporting options by housing up to a year’s worth of firewall log data in the cloud for instant access via the flexible new reporting tools in Sophos Central.

Make sure you have all the storage you need by checking out our convenient storage calculator. It’s extremely affordable, and having all your network traffic data in Sophos Central is super convenient with all the flexible reporting options it provides.

Working remotely

For customers and organizations working remotely, we have a couple of important reminders.  First, we are now approaching one million installations of our free Sophos Connect VPN client and recently announced the EAP for v2 with SSL VPN support on Windows platforms. Sophos is unique among firewall vendors, as we offer unlimited free remote access VPN connections that other vendors would most certainly charge you extra for.

Next, we’ve also recently announced XG Firewall support for Amazon Web Services (AWS) for organizations that may be migrating to or utilizing additional infrastructure in the cloud.  Ensure any cloud infrastructure is properly secured with XG Firewall, which now supports both AWS and Azure.

Working from home or remotely has never been easier with XG Firewall.

20 Tips for Small Businesses

Starting a business is no easy task, no matter the size, but there are a few important steps that small businesses tend to skip out onwhile they’re in the bustle of action. So, I’ve curated 20 tips from listening to small business success stories to create a checklist for you. I hope these 20 tips give you a head start on your journey.

1. Don’t wait to start your Twitter account. Believe in yourself, and watch how your customers believe in you, too.
2. Make immediate, short, and long-term goals. Don’t make your goals unattainable. Be practical, but push yourself.
3. Don’t overdo multi-tasking. In most small businesses, everyone wears a lot of hats. Just make sure that you don’t sacrifice one job in an effort to do all of them at once. The perfect is the enemy of the good.
4. Have back up plans—multiple back up plans. Failing to plan is planning to fail. Think of your worst-case scenarios, and come up with a plan to prevent them.
5. Use LinkedIn to make connections that’ll support you. Connect with every like-minded individual you know. They can help you, and make suggestions as they watch your business grow.
6. Take all the advice you can get. You may have a different game plan, but you’ll never know when someone else’s experience can work in service of your own.
7. Get all the help you can get. It may seem like you have it figured out, but as you grow, you might end up playing catch-up simply because you wanted to do it all yourself.
8. Don’t quit your day job until you absolutely need to. Starting a small business is expensive. Outside income can help you. Plus, you’ll have less stress when getting your business up and running, because you won’t be relying on it for expenses.
9. Go digital. If you can’t afford to pay for software, that’s okay, there are many SaaS offerings out there. Try to digitize your accounting, sales, and project management. The sooner the better.
10. Automate whatever you can. You already have enough to stay on top of. Try to eliminate monotonous tasks by using software solutions. But be careful not to lose your personal touch.
11. Content marketing works. Talk about your product, talk about your business, talk about your dream, talk about anything! Make sure you include SEO keywords to bring in your audience.
12. Don’t be afraid to talk about your business with the people you meet. Word of mouth is still the best means of marketing, and it all starts with you.
13. Analyze everything. From your expenses, to your team’s performance, to your sales, it’s good to keep a track of what’s important, so you’re not in for a rude awakening if something goes wrong.
14. Listen to your customers. Feedback is essential, especially when you’re just getting started and can fix processes before its too late. Always ask what you can be doing better.
15. Make sure you’re available to provide excellent support. That means being available on any platforms your customers are likely to reach out on. Many customers will leave a brand if they don’t get the customer experience they expect.
16. Don’t be afraid of the competition. Especially in an industry that’s well-established. You’re bringing something new to the table, and people are always looking for something exciting that makes sense to them.
17. Develop your company culture. Not only does this hold your team together, but it also gives your customers and prospects an idea of what you’re all about. It can also set you apart from your competition.
18. Stay updated with current affairs. Stay on top of the news—not only in your industry—but in related industries, too. That way, you can make informed decisions proactively that put you ahead of the competition.
19. Invest in training your employees. Every business is different, so don’t expect your team to just catch on over time. You can save yourself from expensive mistakes by offering quality guidance to mold your dream team.
20. Form lasting relationships with both customers and employees. Your employees will be motivated to work harder if they feel appreciated. Your customers will stick with you if they feel understood.

I hope these tips are able to help you, and I wish you success. I’m sure other businesses could benefit from hearing your input, so please leave a comment with any advice that’s served you.

Top 5 cybersecurity risks for education – Sophos News

The ongoing pandemic is resulting in a crisis for schools, colleges, and universities the world over. With physical buildings closed, most educational institutes are moving to emergency remote learning and working.

For most of them, the transition from physical to online models has happened too quickly. Without proper time to vet potential risks, their networks are exposed thanks to the deployment of new technologies and apps. Furthermore, risks can also run high because students and educators aren’t always properly trained to use the new tech.

Further complicating matters, many educational institutes simply don’t have the budgets to overhaul their technology solutions in the face of such an unprecedented and unanticipated pandemic. As a result, some institutes are lured by free tools and apps for online learning, most of which come laden with inadequate privacy controls, user tracking, inappropriate promotional content, and sometimes malware – all of which elevates the risk of not complying with regulatory mandates like FERPA and others.

With remote learning becoming the new normal, cybercriminals are busy finding new ways to leverage techniques like phishing, ransomware, social engineering, and more to pull off attacks. Here’s a look at some of the most critical risks to be addressed in order to safeguard users and data.

1. Secure remote access

With distance learning taking over physical schooling, students and teachers need access to online learning tools mostly located in the cloud – file sharing applications, email, apps – and they sometimes need to remotely access resources on the school network. At the same time, administrative and IT staff working from home may need access to systems and documents located on the school network as well. If remote access isn’t secure, hackers can sneak in and take control of the entire network. Deploy a virtual private network (VPN) that offers secure remote access to your users and protects all data that flows in and out of the VPN by encrypting it.

Students and school staff may bring their own devices and connect them to the school network, some of which may be unpatched and running risky applications, giving easy access to attackers. To counter this, ensure only whitelisted apps run on the network and that only authorized devices can accessing the network. With complete application visibility and control, you can identify all the applications on your network – including shadow IT and data at risk. This allows you to control the apps and apply user-based application controls and traffic shaping. By synchronizing your firewall and endpoint security, you can instantly identify compromised endpoints, isolate them until they are cleaned, and prevent infections from spreading laterally to other devices on the network.

2. Control access to sensitive data

Educational institutes are treasure troves of valuable information that can be sold on the dark web. Personal data of students, teachers, alumni, and administrative staff, along with sensitive data relating to a school’s research and intellectual property can make a hacker very rich by selling it or ransoming it. It’s critical to enforce access based on user identity, allowing authorized users access to only what they need in order to do their jobs. You can protect sensitive data, research, and other critical resources by allowing access to only those who are authorized, with two-factor authentication (2FA) support for access to key system areas, including IPsec and SSL VPN, user portals, and web administration consoles.

3. Protect against malware

The shift to remote learning means many of the devices connecting to the school network are BYOD. It’s difficult to know whether the devices and applications used are updated with patches and if the antivirus is current. Unless such remote devices are connecting via a VPN, you’ll need to ensure they’re secure before they can access resources on the school’s network.

It’s important to deploy advanced web protection capabilities that can identify and block the latest web threats. This allows you to enforce web filtering rules to keep students safe from instances of cyberbullying, inappropriate content, abuse, and other online threats. And with staff working from home, peripheral controls allow you to control what your staff can and can’t plug into their corporate devices. This helps you safeguard your network against unexpected threats.

4. Protect against phishing

Social engineering and phishing attacks pose major IT security risks to schools. Students, teachers, or staff members who get manipulated to click on malicious links can provide cybercriminals access to the school’s network and precious resources. The best way to counter social engineering and phishing attacks is through user awareness and training. Educating and testing your users with simulated attacks helps you facilitate a positive security awareness culture and makes them less likely to fall for scams. Make sure your email security is up to date as well, and that you have advanced protection for all your endpoints so you can protect them against both known and unknown malware, ransomware, exploits, and viruses.

5. Secure mobile computing

Mobile devices like phones, tablets, and others are increasingly used today for remote learning. A single unprotected device increases the risk of compromising the entire school network and systems, especially at a time when schools have lowered the barriers to access their networks, specifically for students. With most devices connected to the internet, the attack surface is significantly amplified for schools. An effective mobile device security solution can help keep your students and staff safe on the internet, preventing risky file downloads and blocking access to inappropriate websites. Mobile antivirus and ransomware protection capabilities can safeguard your users and devices from malicious content and apps.

Sophos can help

Sophos’ unique IT security capabilities offer award-winning protection for schools of all sizes. You can ensure that learning doesn’t stop in times when students aren’t able to access teachers and educational resources in person. Read our whitepaper on Secure remote learning in education to find out more. You can also visit our education protection page to find solutions that help secure educational institutes.

Large Distributed Enterprise Adopts Fortinet’s Comprehensive Secure SD-WAN Solution

Customer Perspectives

Digital innovation initiatives continue to help organizations improve productivity and customer service, but new technology can also introduce new cyber threats for bad actors to exploit by expanding the potential attack surface. And aging branch VPN infrastructures built around WAN edge routers only compound this problem, leaving companies exposed at the edge.

One Fortune 500 organization recently came to Fortinet with exactly that issue. They needed a VPN infrastructure that could scale across their datacenter and multicloud – something they could not achieve using their legacy networks. They were looking for a robust security solution that could support the evolving needs of their branch locations.

Seeking a new, Integrated Secure SD-WAN Solution

After experiencing numerous failures of the legacy routers and basic network firewalls they had deployed at their remote locations due to age, and realizing their contract on their current solution would expire in less than a year, this large distributed enterprise in the United States began seeking a replacement.

With its advanced networking capabilities that include dynamic routing such as BGP, Fortinet Secure SD-WAN — which integrates Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW) and Secure SD-WAN in a single offering — quickly became the front runner. This solution was able to provide advanced security to protect vulnerable branch locations with direct internet access, while also delivering all the benefits of an SD-WAN solution, including improved performance of business-critical applications, better user experience, and better protection at the WAN Edge.

These advantages impressed this company enough to begin an initial pilot at six locations, during which Fortinet was able to highlight its Zero-Touch Provisioning capabilities for simple and fast deployment and management. For a company like this, this was a huge advantage as they manage their environment internally and are always looking to reallocate their security team’s time and attention to other critical security tasks.

This initial pilot also demonstrated Fortinet’s simple deployment and robust combination of networking and security features, prompting this company to extend the pilot to over 150 more locations, all which proved successful. During this time, Fortinet was further set apart from the competition because they were able to provide an enterprise agreement that added additional value and resources to support the organization’s various needs. These included augmenting MPLS with broadband + LTE and the ability to replace MPLS in future, reducing CAPEX through product consolidation, and reducing OPEX with its centralized management.

LAN requirements were another need. Their SD-Branch requirements included the need for access points, switches, and 3G/4G connectivity. They also needed advanced support for cloud and other business critical enterprise applications combined with an effective cloud on-ramp strategy.

Choosing Fortinet Secure SD-WAN to Future-Proof Branch Offices

The company’s existing security solution required centralized inspection and filtering, which meant backhauling all traffic to datacenters to ensure security. What they needed was advanced NGFW capabilities at the branch office/WAN edge to make local breakouts for multi-cloud access possible. At the same time, they wanted to avoid all the bandwidth demands required to send traffic to the data center for inspection. After demonstrating the ability to meet, and even exceed, all of the organization’s security and networking requirements, Fortinet was determined to be the right fit.

While Fortinet was not the least expensive solution presented to this price-sensitive organization, they found that Fortinet provided the most value to their company long-term. Fortinet’s integrated platform approach, including Secure SD-WAN, provided their organization with the following benefits:

  • Reduced Complexity: In their proof of concept trial, the primary competitive solution under consideration was missing advanced routing features and VPN capabilities. A lack of advanced routing BGP capabilities for faster convergence and route-based path selection, and not being able to build overlay VPN tunnels to same destination address were show stoppers. With Fortinet’s fully integrated Next-Generation Firewall and Secure SD-WAN solution, however, the company was able to reduce the number of devices needed at each location.
  • Simple Deployment: With a large installed base of 10,000 branch offices, speed was a priority when it came to deployment and configuration. Fortinet’s Zero-Touch Provisioning reduced deployement time to minutes, saving IT staff resources and eliminating the need deploying additional IT personnel to each site. Additionally, centralized management using FortiManager for network and security needs and analytics provided by FortiAnalyzer enabled easy integration with their NOC and SOC teams for easy problem resolution and troubleshooting.
  • Reduced Bandwidth Requirements: This company was able to establish split tunneling for their traffic at the branch level, enabling web traffic filtering locally while allowing access to corporate applications through VPN to reduce bandwidth requirements.

In addition to the above benefits, the company also valued the opportunity to take full advantage of the ability to extend Secure SD-WAN capabilities into the branch LAN by adding secure switches, wireless APs, and LTE support via Fortinet Secure SD-Branch, effectively future-proofing their solution while continuing to consolidate devices and reduce management overhead.

Take a security-driven approach to networking to improve user experience and simplify operations at the WAN edge with Fortinet’s Secure SD-WAN solution.

Read these customer case studies to see how De Heus and Burger King Brazil implemented Fortinet’s Secure SD-WAN to alleviate network complexity, increase bandwidth, and reduce security costs.
