Filter out disruptive noise in Google Meet

Quick launch summary

To help limit interruptions to your meeting, Google Meet can now intelligently filter out background noise like keyboard typing, doors opening and closing, and construction outside your window. Cloud-based AI is used to remove noise from your audio input while still letting your voice through.

We had previously announced this top-requested feature and are now beginning to roll it out to G Suite Enterprise and G Suite Enterprise for Education customers using Meet on the web. We will bring the feature to mobile users soon, and will announce on the G Suite Updates blog when it’s available.

Gmail tips that help you save time and get more done

The average person receives 120 emails a day, which means keeping your inbox under control can feel like an impossible task. Fortunately, G Suite gives you the tools you need to stay focused and organized. Welcome to the Gmail edition of The Suite Life, a series that brings you tips and tricks to get the most out of G Suite. In this post, we’ll provide advice to help you save time and get more done—right from your Gmail inbox.

Tip 1: Write now, send later with Schedule send

Whether you’re firing off a reply outside of normal work hours, collaborating with teammates across time zones, or want to send your future self a reminder, there are lots of reasons to schedule an email instead of hitting send right away. With Schedule send, you can plan exactly when your email will be sent in Gmail. This means your emails can reach teammates at a time that’s convenient for them.

Coming to Google Meet: Customizable backgrounds, Nest integration, and more

Since making Google Meet premium video meetings free and available to everyone, we’ve continued to accelerate the development of new features for the growing number of individuals, teams, and organizations that rely on Meet to stay connected. Let’s take a look at some of the new features that have launched this month as well as some upcoming roadmap items that we’re working on.

As a reminder, Meet is included in all G Suite editions, as well as to anyone with an email address. If your organization doesn’t use G Suite, you can still get the business version of Meet for your team with the new G Suite Essentials, which includes Meet, Drive, Docs, Sheets, Slides, and more. Signing up for G Suite Essentials is easy—you don’t have to replace or migrate your current email or calendar tools, and it’s free of charge through Sept. 30.

More ways to stay connected
Whether you’re working from home, in the field, on the manufacturing floor, or back in the office, Meet is designed to help everyone connect securely. But for those of us working from home, it can also mean working without a dedicated office space, for example, from your dining table, living room, or basement. To help free up your laptop and keep you connected from whichever room you’re in, today we announced Meet on the Nest Hub Max so you can easily join meetings through your smart home display with a simple tap or voice command. G Suite customers interested in early access can apply here.

Replace your background with an image

Working from home can present other challenges, such as surroundings you don’t want others to see, like toys on the floor or dogs playing behind you. In the coming months, we’ll make it easy to blur out your background, or replace it with an image of your choosing so you can keep your team’s focus solely on you.

Running larger, more effective meetings
New, more flexible work policies mean more people join meetings individually from home, while fewer join together from conference rooms. Meet is designed to scale to support meetings with up to 250 participants or a livestream with 100,000 in-domain viewers, and we continue to add improvements to make your interactions over video feel as close to in-person meetings as possible. Recently, we launched improvements to layouts that let you see up to 16 participants, along with the content that’s being shared, all at the same time. We’re planning to add more improvements, including letting you see up to 49 participants at once.

Other planned upcoming roadmap enhancements to help teams more effectively run large, enterprise-grade meetings include:

  • Hand raising: Increase participation in larger meetings by enabling participants to “raise their hands” when they have a question or something to say.

  • Meeting attendance: Give meeting hosts a simple way to see who attended their meeting.

  • Breakout rooms: Make it easy for large meetings to split into smaller groups, have parallel discussions, and reconvene once finished.

  • Q&A: Provide a channel for the audience to ask questions without disrupting the flow of the conversation.

  • Polling: Engage participants in large meetings with real-time polling.

  • Additional moderator controls: Give meeting hosts additional controls for muting, presenting, joining, and more.

Preparing for the next normal in the office
As organizations prepare to return to the office, meeting room hygiene will be a top priority to keep workers safe. Large meeting rooms are being reconfigured into smaller rooms to support social distancing policies, making video-equipped rooms even more critical for teams that will need to join the same meeting from different rooms upon return. With our complete lineup of Google Meet hardware, including recently launched ASUS starter kit, it’s easy to equip rooms of any size with Meet’s enhanced video capabilities.

While joining meetings on Google Meet hardware is as easy as a single tap on a touchscreen, the fewer surfaces an employee touches, the better it is for meeting room hygiene. That’s why, in the coming weeks, Hey Google voice control (currently in Beta) for Google Meet hardware will be generally available for ASUS and Logitech meeting room kits, making it easy to join and end a meeting with simple voice commands.

Whiteboard.jpg

Whiteboard from anywhere with Jamboard integration in Meet

(Product rendering subject to change)

Jamboard by Google enables teams to creatively brainstorm from laptops, mobile devices, or from physical Jamboards. Later this year, we’ll bring the Jamboard collaborative whiteboard experience directly into Meet. Integrating Jamboard into Meet makes it easy for those who are remote to participate in brainstorming activities, but it also lets workers who are returning to the office whiteboard right from their laptop or mobile device.

Google Meet’s Video Platform Open to All

Click “Start a meeting” and a new window opens with a unique, secure meeting for you to join and then share with others. You can also easily join meetings shared with you by entering a meeting code. And you can plan video meetings and invite others directly from Google Calendar.

Because video meetings have never been more important, we’ve been fast-tracking the most requested features for Meet, and are now making them available to all. Anyone can use Meet’s simple scheduling and screen sharing, real-time captions, and layouts that adapt to your preference, including an expanded tiled view—all built on Google’s secure, reliable global infrastructure. Speaking from my own experience, the new features in Meet are already making our team (and my family) meetings better. We love how tiled view makes us feel more connected—and the occasional surprise visits from kids and family pets!

And we’re continuing to look for ways to make Google Meet more accessible and useful. For example, we know video meetings can be challenging to follow for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, which is why we made sure AI-powered automatic live captioning was available to everyone. One of the most meaningful emails I’ve received was from a parent whose child was able to feel more included thanks to live captioning. Google AI has also made it possible to provide helpful features like low-light mode, which can automatically adjust your video to make you more visible to others.

Meet is available for free for everyone at meet.google.com and on iOS or Android. If you have an existing Google Account (for example, if you’re a @gmail.com user), you can sign in at meet.google.com to get started. If you don’t have a free Google Account, it only takes a minute to create one using your work or personal email address of choice (we require this step as a security measure, and you’ll only need to do this once). Or look for Meet right in Gmail.

We hope Meet will help you connect to all your important meetings—from work meetings, to graduation meetings, to wedding meetings, and everything in between.

Connected Sheets now generally available, replacing Sheets data connector

What’s changing

We’re making Connected Sheets generally available to G Suite Enterprise and G Suite Enterprise for Education customers. Connected Sheets helps you analyze BigQuery data in Google Sheets. It was previously available in beta. Connected Sheets will replace Sheets data connector, a more limited way to connect Sheets and BigQuery.

Read more about how you can use it to analyze petabytes of data with Google Sheets in our Cloud Blog post.

Who’s impacted

End users

Why you’d use it

Connected Sheets links Google Sheets to BigQuery, so you can analyze large BigQuery datasets using familiar spreadsheet tools and operations. This means users don’t need to know SQL and can generate insights with basic spreadsheet operations like formulas, charts, and pivot tables.

This makes it easier for more members of your organization to understand, collaborate on, and generate insights from data. Specifically, it can help subject matter experts work with data without relying on analysts, who may be less familiar with the context of the data or be overloaded with a wide range of data requests.

Connected Sheets includes all the capabilities of the legacy Sheets data connector with additional enhancements. Enhancements include the ability to analyze and visualize data in Sheets without needing to first extract the data, being able to see a preview of data through a Sheet, and scheduling data refreshes to avoid analyzing stale data.

Learn more about how you can analyze petabytes of data with Google Sheets on the Cloud Blog.

Getting started

  • Admins: No action required, Connected Sheets will be ON by default. To use it, you must have set up BigQuery for your organization, and users must have access to tables or views in BigQuery. Use our Help Center to learn more about how to set up Connected Sheets.
  • End users: This feature will be ON by default. To use it, must have access to tables or views in BigQuery. Use our Help Center to learn more about Connected Sheets.

Rollout pace

  • Rapid and Scheduled Release domains: Extended rollout (potentially more than 15 days for feature visibility) starting on June 30, 2020. We expect rollout to complete within a month.

Update your G Suite mobile and desktop apps before August 12, 2020, to ensure they continue working

In 2018, we began making changes to our API and service infrastructure to improve performance and security. As a result of these changes, some older versions of G Suite desktop and mobile apps may stop working on August 12, 2020. In particular, versions released prior to December 2018 may be impacted.

To ensure their workflows are not disrupted, your users should update the following Google apps to the latest versions as soon as possible:

Getting started

  • Admins: Encourage your users to upgrade their apps. If you deploy Drive File Stream to your organization, ensure you’re using the latest version.
  • End users: Upgrade the apps listed above to the latest versions as soon as possible.

Meet features help engage students and moderate classes

First off, we’re making it easier to manage meeting attendees. When someone asks to join a meeting (or “knocks”), they won’t be able to knock again after being ejected from a meeting, and a knock will no longer show up after a moderator rejects it twice. Plus, we’re updating the knocking interface to make knocks less intrusive for educators. Moderators will also be able to end the meeting for all participants, ensuring no students linger after the teacher has left. And we’ll soon block anonymous attendees from joining any Education meetings by default, though schools will be able to opt-in to allow anonymous participants.
